Have you always wanted to overcome the anxiety and fear of visiting the dentist?

Is your fear counterintuitive to your dental health and getting in the way of your happiness?

It is estimated that over 60 percent of people have some fear of the dentist. However, regular visits, exams, and professional cleanings are vital to keeping your teeth and gums healthy, which, in turn, impacts your overall health and wellness.

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to get over ‘dentophobia’ and have more fulfilling orthodontic experiences.

Here are some tips to help you regain control of your dental health.

Should I Talk to Someone About My Dental Anxiety?

To help you come to terms with your fears, it is always beneficial to speak with someone, whether that be your dentists, family members, friends, other patients, or even a therapist.

You’ll soon realize you aren’t alone, and the emotions you are feeling are quite common.

If you are wary about dental procedures, make sure to speak with your dentist and their staff at the beginning of an appointment and let them know how you’re feeling. This way, they can be sensitive to any tense or anxious feelings you may have.

Should I Listen to Music During My Dental Appointment?

Talk with your dentist about listening to some tunes. If the sound of a dental tool or cosmetic treatment bothers you, bring along your favorite music and earphones.

Noise from your favorite musicians can drown out the sound of uncomfortable treatments and put your mind at ease. With one less sense to worry about, it is easier to become less sensitive to the stimulation occurring in your mouth.

Music has been documented to lower blood pressure, which releases natural chemicals that make us less tense. Having a chance to relax with music can also pass the time and make it seem like your treatment or cleaning is going by faster.

Can Breathing Techniques Help My Anxiety?

It can be easy for our anxiousness to cause us to hold our breath or forget to breathe, which lowers oxygen levels and worsens stress. Becoming mindful of your breathing is a great way to center your mind and remain at peace.

Like many meditation techniques, a focused and slowed breath can help reduce stress levels and release muscle tension throughout your body.

Should I Try Sedation Dentistry?

Most dental teams are very understanding and will do everything in their power to make sure your appointment is as comfortable as possible.

Sedation services can make a simple or complex procedure feel short and relieve any physical or emotional stress in a matter of moments.
